Understanding Autism and Monotropism 

Have you ever spent hours focusing on one thing while the rest of your surroundings seemed to disappear from your awareness? 


Think of the times you may have spent hours researching a topic you love, reading about an area of interest, or learning everything you can about a subject that few others seem to care about. 


These autistic interests have often been described as “special interests” or “restricted interests.”


During these moments, you may be so focused on one thing that you lose track of time, forget to eat or drink, or ignore someone trying to talk to you. 


You may feel frustrated, overwhelmed, or uncomfortable when asked to stop this task and focus on something else. 


If this experience resonates with you, you may be experiencing a type of deep attention that is common among autistic individuals, known as monotropism. 


Monotropism is a theory that was developed by autistic individuals and has become increasingly popular among the autistic community. It proposes that autistic people tend to direct attention more toward a smaller number of interests, rather than distributing attention broadly across many competing interests. 


This can make it difficult to transition between tasks or respond to things outside of our current area of attention. It can influence every area of our lives, including routines, cognition, relationships, emotional regulation, and sensory processing.

In this section of our neurodivergent blog, we’ll explore more about monotropism, its connection to autistic interests, and how you can use strategies to work with your autistic attention rather than against it. 



What Is Monotropism?


Monotropism is a theory developed by autistic individuals Dr. Dinah Murray, Dr. Wenn Lawson, and Mike Lesser. It was first articulated in its early form in 1992, with a major paper published in 2005


The theory is based on the fact that our minds are interest-based systems. Each of us is interested in different people, activities, ideas, and experiences. It is these interests that help to guide where we direct our attention. 


Autistic people experience a deep and sustained attention toward a smaller number of interests or activities at a time, also known as monotropism. 


Rather than being able to focus your attention across many different things happening around us, when something captures monotropic attention may become deeply absorbed in one area. Competing information and stimuli may become less noticeable or may be filtered into the background. 


On the other hand, the theory of polytropism is that attention is more broadly distributed across multiple interests.


The difference can be explained by looking at this like a flashlight. 


A polytropic, broadly distributed attentional style might illuminate several things in a room at once, while a monotropic attentional style may illuminate one particular area very brightly. The rest of the room is still there, but it isn’t getting as much of the available attentional resource as the illuminated area. 


The monotropic theory sees autistic experiences as something that needs to be understood as differences in attention allocation, rather than as a deficit that needs to be corrected. 


Monotropism vs. Hyperfocus


Monotropism and hyperfocus are often seen as similar because they both involve deep focus or engagement on a single thing, but they are also different.


Hyperfocus is a trait that is common in individuals with ADHD, though it can also occur in autistic individuals. During hyperfocus, an individual may concentrate on or become intensely absorbed in one activity. Everything else may be ignored. Hyperfocus typically occurs when a task is interesting or stimulating. 


Monotropism is a broader theory. It provides a framework for understanding how attention and interests are distributed, with autistic attention described as tending toward deeper focus on fewer interests at a given time.


Some recent research has investigated autistic hyperfocus and its relationship with monotropism. A 2025 study found that there were higher rates of self- and caregiver-reported hyperfocus among autistic adolescents. However, when researchers used different ways of measuring attention, those measures did not always produce the same results. 


The researchers emphasized that more research is needed to understand how laboratory measures relate to real-world autistic experiences.


This is important because there isn't one single way that autistic attention works. Autistic people have highly individual experiences.


What Does Monotropic Attention Feel Like? 


Not all autistic people will relate to monotoprism in the same way, but if you do experience it, you may recognize it by the characteristics below.


Losing Track of Time 


Monotropism may make it difficult to keep track of time when your attention is deeply focused on something. 


When you become immersed in an interest or activity, you may lose awareness of how much time has passed. For example, you might begin researching something at 2:00 p.m., only to look up several hours later and realize it is now 7:00 p.m. 


When you look up, you may be surprised that so much time has passed because your attention has been so deeply engaged in what you are doing. 


This can sometimes make it difficult to notice when it is time to eat, take a break, complete another responsibility, or transition to a different activity. 


These experiences can look similar to time agnosia experienced in ADHD and other neurotypes, including autism. 


Flow States 


Monotropism can cause autistic people to become deeply immersed in something that captures their interest. 


These autistic interests, sometimes referred to as special interests or SPINs, can involve a particular subject, activity, skill, person, collection, or area of knowledge that an autistic person forms a deep interest in. 


When an interest strongly captures your attention, you may enter what is commonly described as a flow state.


During the flow state, you may become less aware of what is happening around you. 

However, for some autistic people, monotropism can be a positive thing at times, as it may allow for deep engagement in an activity that can feel energizing and rewarding instead of draining. 


When autistic people have opportunities to follow their interests and work within their natural attentional patterns, these periods of deep focus can also support learning, creativity, problem-solving, and the development of expertise. 


Not Noticing Other Things 


When your attention is deeply focused on one specific thing, you may also become less aware of competing information around you. 


You might not notice someone calling your name, realize that someone has entered the room, or remember that you were supposed to be doing something else. 


Your attention may simply be so concentrated on what you are doing that other information becomes less noticeable. 


This can lead to difficulty responding to people around you, missing information or cues, or realizing later that you missed something important. 


Difficulty Switching Between Tasks



A common trait of autism is difficulty with transitions or a need for sameness. 

It is these needs that can show through with monotropism. You may become so deeply ingrained with one topic that it becomes difficult to stop or switch between tasks, even if you know that you need to move on.


When someone tells you that it is time to stop, disengaging from the activity can feel impossible and frustrating to attempt to do so. 


Mentally shifting away from what you were doing before so you can focus on something new requires more time for you than it does for others. 


Difficulty With Interruptions


If you are focused on something you feel is deeply important, any interruption can feel irritating and distressing. 


Being pulled away from something you were deeply engaged in can also feel abrupt. This feeling can be particularly intense when you don’t have the opportunity to reach a natural stopping point or prepare for the transition. 


“Monotropic Split” 


Monotropic split is a topic that describes what may happen when you are expected to divide your attention across multiple competing demands. 


For example, if you are focused on writing an important report, you may be concentrating on organizing information and maintaining your train of thought. 


But when someone asks you a question, your manager changes a deadline, or you receive an email, each demand requires you to redirect your attention. 


You can’t necessarily do six things at once, so you may experience the cumulative effect of repeatedly shifting your attention between competing demands.


Everyone experiences the effects of a monotropic split differently, but it may commonly contribute to:


Unexpected transitions may be particularly challenging because you have not had an opportunity to prepare your attention for the change.


This may be why executive functioning difficulties can become more noticeable when you are overwhelmed. 


Starting a task, remembering information, sequencing steps, managing time, and moving between activities can all become more difficult when your attentional resources are already stretched.


For some autistic people, prolonged demands of this kind may also contribute to shutdown, meltdown, or autistic burnout.


Monotropism and Social Communication Challenges


Monotropism may also be a way to understand how autistic communication works. 

Social interactions often involve processing multiple pieces of information at once. You may need to listen to someone’s words and interpret their tone of voice, facial expressions, body language, and the social context. 


Trying to process all of this information simultaneously can require a lot of attention to detail. 


For this reason, autistic people may prefer clear, direct, literal, and predictable communication that focuses on one topic at a time and doesn’t require significant attentional demands. 


Some autistic people may also find that it is easier to communicate with people when they are focused on a subject that interests them. 


For example, you may have a difficult time explaining a boring concept to others or understanding what they are saying, but you may become extremely enthusiastic when discussing a favourite topic. 


In these moments, you may share a large amount of information because your attention is deeply engaged with the subject, which is sometimes described as info dumping


Although info dumping may be misunderstood by others, sharing detailed information about an interest can also be thought of as a different way of expressing emotions such as excitement and joy, building connections, and communicating knowledge or expertise in a specific subject. 


How Can Differences in Communication Be Understood through the Double-Empathy Problem?


Social communication is often expected to follow neuronormativity or dominant societal norms about how one should act and communicate. As a result, autistic people are often seen as having social deficits because they communicate in different ways from these norms. 


But the double empathy problem sees communication challenges differently. It proposes that communication difficulties between autistic and non-autistic individuals can arise from communication differences between people rather than being a deficit within the autistic person.


For autistic and non-autistic individuals to understand one another, society needs to create opportunities for mutual understanding of different communication styles.  


Monotropism and sensory regulation


Your attention can be influenced by the type of sensory information in your surroundings and how much information is coming through your senses. 


If you are focused on something and then you hear an unexpected noise in the background, your attention may be pulled away from what you were doing. 


For many autistic people, repeated sensory interruptions can be difficult. You may experience:


Stimming may be a way of managing your sensory and attentional experiences. Stimming involves repetitive self-regulatory behaviours that help you regulate your nervous system, concentrate, express emotions, or process sensory input.


These behaviours may include rocking, pacing the room, tapping your fingers, humming, or repeating words.


Understanding the relationship between attention and sensory regulation can therefore help us think about autistic behaviour differently.


Monotropism and Autistic Inertia


Monotropism can also provide a useful framework for understanding autistic inertia.

Autistic inertia refers to difficulty initiating a new task or transitioning from one activity or state to another. 


If you are focused on reading and you need to make dinner, moving your attention away from reading and toward cooking requires a transition. 


You may become stuck and unable to get up and start cooking, even if you know that you need to eat and you want to cook dinner. 


Even if you are hungry, your attention may remain engaged with reading. 


Monotropism and Learning


Becoming deeply immersed in special interests is a common trait of autism, and it can apply to learning too. Imagine if you were told that you needed to learn something that didn’t interest you. 


Did you imagine that you would struggle to engage with the learning material and stay focused?


However, if someone connects the topic to something that interests you, would this change things?


The information has become meaningful and therefore easier to connect with and learn. You may become more curious about the topic and want to know more. 


This is one reason interest-based learning can be so powerful for some autistic people.

Rather than treating interests as distractions, educators can sometimes use them as pathways into learning.


For example, a student who loves trains might learn mathematics through train schedules or geography through railway maps. You can apply this to other topics and areas of your life as well. 


Monotropism in the Workplace


Most traditional workplaces focus on rewarding productivity, which usually requires the ability to switch attention between multiple tasks. 


In a traditional workplace, you may be expected to answer emails while attending meetings, respond immediately to messages, handle interruptions, or change priorities quickly. 


If you experience monotropic attention or have a strong tendency to focus your attention on one thing, having to constantly switch between tasks can be exhausting. 


When given uninterrupted quiet time, you may produce excellent work. But if you are frequently interrupted, it can make it difficult to regain concentration. 


Accommodations may help to ensure that your working environment supports how you naturally allocate attention. Possible accommodations might include:


  • Blocks of uninterrupted work time

  • Reduced unnecessary meetings

  • Written instructions

  • Working remotely

  • Advance notice of changes

  • Clear priorities

  • Fewer simultaneous projects

  • Quiet workspaces

  • Noise reduction

  • Flexible scheduling

  • Communication expectations that do not require immediate responses


Everyone's needs differ, and the appropriate accommodations will depend on your individual needs and workplace.



The Benefits of Monotropic Attention


The discussion about monotropic attention usually focuses on how autistic attention is difficult. However, there are some instances where monotropic attention may be a strength, including:


  • Deep Learning: When you are deeply interested in something, you may be able to develop extensive knowledge and expertise.

  • Creativity: Deep engagement can create opportunities to explore ideas, patterns, connections, and possibilities.

  • Problem Solving: Spending significant time with a problem can allow you to notice details and connections that others may overlook.

  • Expertise: Long-term engagement with an interest can lead to highly developed skills and specialized knowledge.

  • Joy: Deep interests can simply be enjoyable or something that makes your life better.


Strategies for Working With Monotropism


Monotropism is experienced differently across autistic individuals, and no two autistic people are the same. However, some neurodiversity-affirming strategies may support you if monotropic attention is impacting your daily life. 


1. Use Transition Warnings


If you know that you have a difficult time with transitions and prefer routine, try not to expect yourself to instantly be able to stop a task. 


Instead, you can give your brain a transition warning or break period between tasks to prepare for a task switch. 


These transition warnings can be verbal, such as telling yourself, “I'm going to stop in 20 minutes” or “One more section, then I'll make dinner.” They can also be visual, such as using the Pomodoro Technique or a visual timer to count down.


A transition warning can make the shift feel more predictable and less overwhelming for your nervous system.


2. Create Natural Stopping Points


Stopping randomly in the middle of a book or when writing a report can be frustrating. Rather than stopping randomly, try to identify a natural endpoint. 


For example, if you are reading a book, you may tell yourself, “I'll finish this chapter, and then I will stop.”


Focusing on natural stopping points may make disengagement easier.


3. Connect Less-Interesting Tasks to Your Interests


If you need to complete something that doesn't naturally capture your attention, look for ways to connect it to something meaningful. For example, if you like music, play your favourite songs while you work on the boring report. 


4. Protect Deep Work Time


Monotropism can be used as a strength if deep focus helps you to get things done. Build space for monotropism and deep work time. 


Instead of trying to eliminate your tendency toward deep attention, ask: “Where can this work for me?”


You may be able to schedule uninterrupted periods for creative projects, research, or work that requires sustained attention. 


5. Use External Reminders


Even if monotropism can help you complete work, it may also take you away from your bodily needs. During focused work, look to build in external reminders for meals, water breaks, medication, bathroom breaks, and sleep. 


These external supports can be particularly helpful when your bodily needs are less noticeable because your attention is elsewhere.


6. Make Transitions More Appealing


Transitions themselves can be extremely boring, which can make it difficult to switch your attention to a different task. 


To make transitions more appealing, you can try adding more enjoyable things, such as: 


  • Listening to music

  • Having a favourite drink

  • Changing the lighting

  • Moving to a preferred workspace


The goal is to try to make transitions feel like a positive thing, rather than a negative. 


7. Reduce Unnecessary Interruptions


When interruptions pull you away from deep focus, you can consider reducing unnecessary interruptions and creating boundaries around your attention. At work, this can look different for each person, but some examples may include:


  • Turning off notifications

  • Using a “do not disturb” status

  • Blocking your calendar

  • Wearing headphones

  • Communicating when you are available


8. Practice Self-Compassion


Self-compassion involves treating yourself the same way you would a close friend. If a friend were struggling to switch tasks, what would you tell them? 


Instead of telling them that they are just lazy, you may tell them that the transition may be difficult for them, and it is okay to experience challenges with transitions. 


During these moments, try to be kind to yourself. Ask yourself, “What is making this transition difficult?”


Understanding why a transition is difficult for you may help with finding solutions. For example, if a transition is difficult because you are exhausted, a 15-minute power nap between tasks may help. If the environment is overwhelming, perhaps some loop earplugs would help. 


How Can Others Support Autistic Attention?


If you support an autistic individual, you may think that their special interests and monotropic attention style are obsessions or that they are something to fix. However, they are simply different ways of navigating and relating to information and attention. 


If you are trying to support an autistic individual during a transition period between tasks, you may want to consider the following:


  • Respect Interests: Ask questions about what the person is interested in rather than automatically treating the interest as something that needs to be redirected.

  • Build Around Strengths: Whenever possible, use interests to support learning, communication, connection, and participation.

  • Avoid Shame: Being deeply interested in something isn't inherently inappropriate. Support balance and access in everyday life, rather than attempting to eliminate autistic interests.

Monotropism and Neurodiversity-Affirming Support


Monotropism offers an important shift in how we think about autistic attention.


Instead of asking, “How do we make this autistic person pay attention better?” We can ask, “How can we create an environment where their attention can work effectively?”

This distinction matters.


Neurodiversity-affirming support looks at the challenges that individuals with monotropism experience while aiming to understand those challenges within the context of the person’s environment, needs, strengths, and communication style.

Is monotropism the same as autism?

No. Monotropism is a theory about attention that was developed by autistic people to help explain autistic experiences. It is not autism itself and should not be used by itself to determine whether someone is autistic.

The theory has been discussed for decades, but research examining specific aspects of monotropism is still developing. Recent studies have investigated autistic hyperfocus, attentional disengagement, sensory experiences, and interest-based attention, with findings that are nuanced and do not support one simple explanation for every autistic person's attention.
